Leaders of the conservative group Moms for Liberty are behind a new charter school in Charleston. AdvertisementSome leaders of Moms for Liberty, the conservative group that has pushed for "parental rights" in schools nationwide, are behind the opening of a new charter school. Tara Wood, the chair of Charleston's Moms for Liberty chapter and a member of the new charter school's board, told Business Insider in a statement that "Ashley River Classical Academy is not a Moms for Liberty school." "We are simply trying to protect our children from sexually explicit books," the group's Charleston chapter says on its website. Asked about the curriculum, Wood said: "What is so 'controversial' about the year our country was founded?"

‘America Is Under Attack’: Inside the Anti-D.E.I. “In support of ridding schools of C.R.T., the Right argues that we want nonpolitical education,” Mr. Klingenstein wrote in August 2021. In a 2023 exchange, Dr. Yenor and two associates discussed how to defend Amy Wax, a conservative law professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Yenor and his allies bristled at the conventions of academic life as overly solicitous toward female and nonwhite students. Samuel Ginn, Claremont donor“The president then told him, ‘Things will change,’” a Claremont fund-raiser wrote to Dr. Yenor and other officials there.

Norton is the general counsel of Hillsdale College, a small, conservative Christian school in the southern part of the state. One of his guests was Ian Northon, a Hillsdale alumnus and private lawyer who did work for the college. Also in attendance were a couple of state lawmakers, Beth Griffin and Julie Alexander, who represented conservative districts north of Detroit. Northon would later describe the meeting to the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol. “Somebody at Hillsdale reached out to me, said they are going to have this little meeting,” he testified.

Title IX and the Assault on Hillsdale College

Michigan Tech has come out on top and Harvard at the bottom in the largest-ever survey looking into the state of free speech on America's college campuses. Most elite colleges, including Penn and Yale, trail larger state schools with more working-class students. Images: Shutterstock/FIRE Composite: Mark KellyHillsdale, Mich.Embedded in a civil lawsuit against Hillsdale College is an assault on the fabric of this small, private Christian school founded in 1844. The lawsuit, brought by two undergraduate women who allege that they were raped two years ago by male Hillsdale students of their acquaintance, alleges not only that the college was negligent in handling their complaints, but also that it failed to afford them the protection to which they were entitled under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Here are a few snapshots from higher education in America:Under a new provision in state budgeting, public universities in North Carolina will cease funding distinguished professorships in the humanities, reserving them for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The furor around elite universities over their responses (or non-responses) to Hamas’s massacre in Israel has now inspired a group of white-shoe law firms to collectively demand a stronger response to antisemitism from leading law schools. Ron DeSantis of Florida, in his continuing higher education wars, is trying to shut down pro-Palestinian student groups whose national chapter supported Hamas’s attacks. A new survey from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression found weak student support for free speech on campus, and the weakest support among the most liberal students; meanwhile the schools whose students were friendliest to the discussion of unpopular views included the right-leaning Hillsdale College and the self-consciously classically liberal University of Chicago.

Hardline Republicans axed Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the man who spent years orchestrating his rise to become House speaker, after he relied on Democrats to help pass a short-term funding bill to keep the government open last month. When McCarthy got the boot, McHenry was elevated to become the powerless temporary speaker – known as speaker pro tempore – able to keep the House in session but not to pass any legislation. The mechanism for such an arrangement could be a simple resolution giving McHenry the temporary power to move appropriations legislation. I asked her by email about why having a temporary speaker would be appealing, and she suggested it’s not a good option, but maybe the least bad option in the face of an institutional leadership crisis. In fact, Postell predicted an even more partisan atmosphere if the House speaker was to permanently become a less powerful position.

CNN —Kevin McCarthy is House speaker no more. WOLF: But Cannon (unlike McCarthy) was never in danger of losing his job, right? So really, the difference here, I would say, is that Cannon was a czar and McCarthy is not. WOLF: How do you think Cannon would view what’s happening to McCarthy? Trump won 76% of the white evangelical vote in 2020, down from 80% in 2016, according to Edison Research exit polls. In a March poll, Trump edged DeSantis among evangelicals in a two-way matchup 51% to 42%, a nine-point improvement for Trump from the month before. The gathering is traditionally an important stop for Republican presidential candidates, although this year DeSantis, who was invited, will not be going. Vander Plaats said evangelicals will consider whether Trump can prevail next year after losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. “I don’t think President Trump is a principled man -- I think he was a great president,” Ascol said.
April 8 (Reuters) - Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ramped up his fight against Walt Disney Co (DIS.N), seeking to void an agreement that Disney passed to limit the power of a board appointed by DeSantis to oversee its Florida theme park property. On Thursday in remarks made at Hillsdale College in Michigan, DeSantis said the legislature would void changes Disney made shortly before it lost control of the board. And so come hell or high water, we're going to make sure that policy of Florida carries the day," the Florida governor said. Florida lawmakers passed a bill in February giving DeSantis effective control over a board that oversees municipal services and development in a special district that encompasses Walt Disney World resort. "What Disney has tried to do is they have tried to say that they should be able to operate outside the context of our constitutional system in Florida," DeSantis said on Thursday.
Ron DeSantis and Disney have been at odds since the company opposed the "Don't Say Gay" bill. In February, the Florida legislature voted to strip Disney of its self-governing ability. Now, in response to moves by Disney, DeSantis says he's considering another approach: tolls and taxes. It is in this context that DeSantis has proposed new taxes and tolls in and around Disney. "They are not superior to the people of Florida," DeSantis said during a speech at Hillsdale College, a conservative liberal arts college in Michigan, on Thursday.

Ron DeSantis acknowledged Disney had "tried to pull a fast one" over control in Florida. Ron DeSantis of Florida has pledged he isn't done with trying to control Walt Disney World. He pledged that the company, which had benefitted from a special carve-out for decades, would eventually pay its debts and taxes. DeSantis said the legislature would void Disney's actions and also consider taxes on hotels, new tolls, and developing properties. Ron DeSantis made at Hillsdale College.
